⌚ ORIGINS ⌚
Reapers were created by both Erebus and Anora. There is still talk of the original soldiers created by them wandering the world, hidden and out of sight. If there are, they have not made themselves known. Those original soldiers have either the blessing, or curse, of immortality and not being bound to a mortal. Hence the whispers that they still wander. It has neither been proven nor disproved. They've since been adopted into urban legends and fall under the category of cryptids to many.
Erebus and Anora were ultimately deities of death. One, Erebus, believing sentient beings’ life, and by extension, their souls, were theirs to do with as pleased, and that they do not deserve to pass on and that mortals were weaker and deserved to be controlled and owned. The other, Anora, believed the opposite, that the sentient beings needed to be protected, both soul and body, and when the time came for them to pass, they have the right too and it should be a feeling of peace. Reapers is the name the beings they protect gave them due to their ability to take their souls, both into the afterlife and possibly for other nefarious reasons.
Reapers were created to protect and guide. Most are morally good and follow this instinct of being guardians. They're often found with their charges almost all the time, but it doesn't mean they are forced to hang around them every minute of every day. Reapers also can watch over their charges in the spirit world, which is not visible to anyone aside from Reapers and others supernatural beings such as wraiths and spirits.
In a universe that is ever changing, it’s hard to pinpoint who may be assigned a Reaper. Many things have souls, but not all was kept in mind when Anora cast their spell. It’s generally theorized that sentient beings of human-level intelligence are assigned a Reaper at birth.
